A joint venture benefitting the winery employees of the Mullineux and Leeu Family Wines, this project is aimed at improving the livelihood of the staff and their families through the profits generated by Great Heart sales. The label features a Cape Wagtail bird that bears a marking that resembles a heart on its chest plumage and is known for its acts of selflessness and courage in assisting others in South African folklore. Great Heart's red blend is typically led by syrah and this incarnation is notably expressive of the grape's peppery and generous nature. Full-bodied but not heavy, this engaging blend features delicate oak and fruit-derived spice, an abundance of black fruit and no shortage of personality. Lithe tannins, an undercurrent of freshness make for a gratifying textural experience. Excellent length. Best now to 2026. T

90% whole-bunch fermentation. Matured for 12 months in 500-litre barrels, some 5 – 10% new before being transferred to 5 000-litre foudre for almost a year. Alc: 13.4%. The nose shows red and black berries overlain by violets, fynbos and white pepper. pure fruit, snappy acidity and fine tannins. Great flavour intensity and drive, the finish long and savoury.

Just a hint of reduction before potpourri, lavender, fynbos, red and black berries, olive, clove and pepper. The palate has pure fruit, fresh acidity and powdery tannins. Concentrated and direct with lovely poise and focus.

Made from 100% whole-cluster grapes, the 2021 Granite Syrah is dense with a firm, rocky core and fresh layers of spicy red and black fruit tones that erupt from the glass. With immense mineral tension and fine-grained tannins, this will need some time to come around but will indeed finish strong. Your patience will be rewarded; give the wine time.

The 2021 Iron Syrah probably has the most nuanced bouquet - very cohesive with intense blackberry, blueberry, and white pepper scents, the most backward of the three single vineyard sites. The palate is medium bodied with finely chiseled and a keen thread of acidity, but real structure and density, layers of mineral rich black fruit fruit laced with black pepper and graphite towards the finish. Superb.

Bursting with a fresh and juicy nose, the 2021 Iron Syrah is ripe with red-fruited elements of dark cherry and spiced red plum before showing a delicate, rocky essence that sways with notes of turned earth and red peppercorn. Medium to full-bodied, the palate clamps down with firm tannins that grow across the gum line and will need some time but still serve as a testament that this beautiful Syrah has plenty of life left to give. Nicely done!
