Elegant & Earthy

Two millennia of wine history in the Southern Rhône Valley has naturally created a selection of grape varietals well adapted to the Lirac region and its terroir: soil, landscape and climate. The Lirac appellation extends itself on the low hills alongside the river, just across the Rhone river from the beautiful vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Rodolphe de Pins, owner and winemaker at Chateau de Montfaucon, is very attached to the idea that they must conserve this natural heritage that is a true asset to their region. This evolution leads to well balanced and harmonious wines with a true identity of Rhône.

Chateau du Montfaucon crafts their Côtes-du-Rhône to express the intense fruit characteristics of the appellation, blending to achieve harmony and balance. A well-balanced, expressive wine, open on the nose with notes of sweet spices, red fruits and a delicious touch of honey. The palate, in unison, is elegant and fine, structured by silky tannins.

This product is part of the LCBO Vintages program. It may take approximately 10-14 business days to be delivered.

About the Winery

Château de Montfaucon

Just across the Rhone river from the beautiful vineyards of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the Lirac appellation extends itself on the low hills alongside the river. The history of Château de Montfaucon dates back to the 11th century when the castle's first tower was built. The castle's role in history was strategic; the Rhône River was the border between the French Kingdom and the Holy Roman German Empire. Montfaucon was one of many castles and fortresses along the Rhône River constructed to guard the border.

Rodolphe de Pins took over the family estate of Montfaucon in 1995 and subsequently rebuilt the winery and began practicing sustainable agriculture. He honed his winemaking skills in Barossa at Henschke and Vieux Telegraphe in Châteauneuf du Pape before returning to Lirac, so needless to say, his familiarity with the local varieties is well established.

Lovely, evolving, classic southern Rhône aromatics are on display in this sharp value from Montfaucon, while the palate delivers ripe, succulent, fleshy red and black fruit, black pepper, wild herbs and more in the regional idiom. It has class and finesse above the generic appellation and moderate price. I love the supple but succulent texture and fine length, too.
