Two millennia of wine history in the Southern Rhône Valley has naturally created a selection of grape varietals well adapted to the Lirac region and its terroir: soil, landscape and climate. The Lirac appellation extends itself on the low hills alongside the river, just across the Rhone river from the beautiful vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Rodolphe de Pins, owner and winemaker at Chateau de Montfaucon, is very attached to the idea that they must conserve this natural heritage that is a true asset to their region. This evolution leads to well balanced and harmonious wines with a true identity of Rhône.

This cuvee, named after Baron Louis de Montfaucon, the founder of the family who restored the medieval castle of Montfaucon in the 19th century. He was a true wine lover, and produced and sold his own wines. It is in his honor that this cuvée, a blend of five grape varieties (50% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Cinsault, 10% Carignan, 10% Mourvèdre), bears his name. Baron Louis has the richness of the Southern Rhone Valley wines associated with the finesse and elegance that characterize Montfaucon’s wines. Sourced from a selection of the Chateau's old vines, with an average age of 60 years old.

About the Winery

Château de Montfaucon

Just across the Rhone river from the beautiful vineyards of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the Lirac appellation extends itself on the low hills alongside the river. The history of Château de Montfaucon dates back to the 11th century when the castle's first tower was built. The castle's role in history was strategic; the Rhône River was the border between the French Kingdom and the Holy Roman German Empire. Montfaucon was one of many castles and fortresses along the Rhône River constructed to guard the border.

Rodolphe de Pins took over the family estate of Montfaucon in 1995 and subsequently rebuilt the winery and began practicing sustainable agriculture. He honed his winemaking skills in Barossa at Henschke and Vieux Telegraphe in Châteauneuf du Pape before returning to Lirac, so needless to say, his familiarity with the local varieties is well established.

There’s a touch of pepper and juniper here, it’s full-bodied, very savoury style. The tannins are just-ripe and it’s well balanced with a long finish - there's tension and power here rather than concentration of fruit, and it will take a while to really reveal itself. This will be one of the longer-lasting Liracs of the vintage. A blend of Grenache Noir (50%), Cinsault (15%), Syrah (15%), Carignan (10%), Mourvèdre (10%). Hand-harvested, destemmed. 80% spends a year in one or two-year-old barriques. Then it all spends a year in concrete, followed by a further year in bottle.
