Cantina Bolzano, South Tyrol's largest cooperative winery, represents a union of over 224 growers from 350 hectares of Bolzano's finest vineyards. Formed in 2001 by merging the historical Gries Winery (1908) and St. Magdalena Winery (1930), Cantina Bolzano combines traditional expertise with a youthful, visionary approach. Grapes are sourced across a variety of distinctive vineyard locations, ranging from 240 to 800 meters above sea level, utilizing both alluvial valley floors and sandy hillside soils. Their rigorous selection process and green cultivation methods yield high-quality grapes, resulting in a wide range of wines across their Classic, Election, and Riserva lines.

Lagrein, one of the most typical red wine varieties of Alto Adige, thrives on the valley floor around Bolzano with its pronounced diurnal temperature variations. The grape variety produces intensely coloured and complex wines. Expect fruity aromas of ripe cherry and blackberry with floral aromas of violets and lilac with typical notes of cocoa and spicy aromas. This is an elegant, juicy and well structured wine.

Pair this with your next charcuterie board or dishes made with speck, sausage, or game.

90 Points - John Szabo, MS

Deeply coloured and very fruity on the nose, with appealing black cherry and plummy notes leading, the Bolzano cooperative delivers another solid value here from this native red variety. It's soft and low in tannins per the textbook profile, while acids are comfortably ripe. I like the plump, juicy fruit on the palate, ripe but still fresh, and the lingering finish. Nicely done. Chill lightly and ready to go or hold short term.
