Nicolas Potel is an iconic producer and pioneer in the Burgundy winemaking scene. He grew up in a family dedicated to wine; and after gaining some experience internationally, he started his own project in the late 90's. The Maison Roche de Bellene offers a complete range of carefully cultivated and versatile wines, often made from old vines. All of the Maison wines are made with respect to sustainable and natural farming practices, with as little intervention as necessary to showcase their individual terroirs.

Potel created the Bellenum Collection to offer exceptional wines at an affordable price. These wines highlight the developmental stages of specific vintages and showcase the diversity of Burgundy's climats. He selected the best crus and cuvées from over 2,500 wines, featuring notable vintages from as early as 1959.

This Clos Vougeot Grand Cru presents a beautifully mature yet vibrant character, perfectly balancing ripe fruit with developing savoury nuances. On the palate, it shows impressive density for its age, offering juicy layers of cherry and pomegranate, enhanced by delicate floral notes of rose hip and the tangy brightness of tamarind. The oak is finely integrated, playing a secondary role that allows the elegance of the Pinot Noir to take centre stage. Refined and harmonious, the wine’s complexity unfolds with each sip.

There's potential to cellar this wine further, though it's drinking exceptionally well now. Sip this sophisticated Pinot with delicate cured meats like prosciutto or pâté, or mild, aged cheeses.

95 Points - Michael Godel

Yet another older pinot noir lost to barrels in places unknown and unearthed by Nicolas Potel as he scours the landscape to find Bourgogne gems hidden beneath unturned rocks and in the subterranean annals of houses in the region. The nose on a 2006 is closed at first but takes less time than expected to open up. In fact it's one of those old Bourgogne that might seem mired in a dumb phase to wonder if it will ever rebound. That it does and this time easily so with an über fresh and energetic Clos de Vougeot emergence, of striking acidity and still austere tannins. These structural comports might mean little if it was not for the cryogenically kept fruit freshness and juicy vitality once released but then refusing to dissipate. The longevity of this Grand Cru is exceptional and we might just see this wine live another 18 years - well certainly drink well for upwards of half that amount of time. Drink 2024-2032.
