In 1984 Neil Ellis sourced grapes from vineyards not of his own and produced wine in rented cellar space. At the time, these grapes were sourced in the Stellenbosch district and meant a lot of nosing around the restrictive quota system prevalent at the time.

Today, the experience and knowledge of the past are applied to modern techniques and technologies for a new generation of winemaking. “Our vision remains to make distinctive, refined wines that are expressive of their terrain and rank amongst South Africa’s finest. A pursuit of quality, nothing less.”- Neil Ellis

Sourced from the same property as the Groenekloof Sauvignon Blanc, the Syrah grows in a unique micro-climate of warm days and cool nights to ensure optimal flavour development and steady sugars. The nose shows hints of raspberries with contributing perfumed aromas of violets. Juicy flavours of red and dark cherries on the palate with peppery notes lingering in the background. This wine is well balanced and fresh, with the fruit delicately framed by fine tannins.

Elegant and approachable, this wine partners perfectly with good food and friends. A wine for every moment.

92 Points - David Lawrason

This is a typically hefty Cape syrah yet made with polish and flair. The aromatic intensity is very good with a core of black cherry fruit and amid layers of smoke, pepper and dried meat typical of the variety. It is quite full bodied but not heavy, with very well balanced alcohol, acid and slightly crusty tannin. Those smoky/tarry notes roll onto the finish, hitting excellent length. Great BBQ red.
