About the Winery
Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines
Mullineux Family Wines, established in 2007 in the Swartland region of South Africa, is owned and managed by Chris and Andrea Mullineux. Since its inception the winery has established itself as one of South Africa’s most celebrated wine brands, both locally and internationally. Originally from Northern California, Winemaker Andrea Mullineux studied Viticulture and Oenology at UC-Davis before working in Stellenbosch and meeting Chris at a wine festival in Champagne. Chris is the Viticulturist in charge of the vineyards on their farm on Kasteelberg Mountain as well as fruit sourcing for their value Kloof Street wines.
The vineyards at Roundstone are farmed organically and are in the process of becoming Regenerative Organic certified. This involves practices like crop rotation, no-till farming, and eliminating chemical pesticides and fertilizers. These methods help rehabilitate soil, promote animal welfare, and improve farmers' livelihoods while sequestering carbon and producing healthier yields. In the winery, no additives are used aside from minimal sulfur dioxide, and all operations are IPW certified, following environmental best practices. Waste, including grape skins and lees, is recycled or repurposed, and cellar effluent is processed through an eco-friendly wetland system.

70% Chenin Blanc, 11% Clairette Blanche, 8% Viognier, 6% Grenache Blanc, 5% Semillon Gris. A complex nose of pear, peach, guava and apple, with floral and herbal nuances plus a touch of reduction. The palate is rich and textured – almost chewy, if a white can be – showing impressive concentration, moderate acidity and a gently savoury finish. Harmonious, though arguably a little weighty.

Yet another very classy and classic chenin from the Mullineux family of Swartland - the arid, warmer interior region producing very mineral and powerful wines. This shows a full on nose of yellow pear, papaya with lovely clover honey, subtle fresh herbs and wet stone. Very complex, and these aromas stay so well focused across the palate. It is full bodied, warm (14%) fleshy yet so well structured. It doesn't pounce or dramatize, but I was caught off guard by how long and pure the finish is. Outstanding length. Tasted August 2026

The Mullineux's Old Vine White remains one of the massive values of the wine world, not that you heard it from me, but really, where can you find a wine of this depth and magnitude, and complexity and seamless density, at $40? It's just hard to fathom, let alone match. This 2025 is yet another genuine beauty, with flavour intensity off the charts and a finish that reverberates on and on. Such a marvel of creamy custard-pineapple, pear, citrus zest, juice and pith, sweet herbs, yellow flowers, and I could go on. Just a magnificent wine, and the price, is, well, silly in the context of the world's great whites. Buy a case of it and follow over the next decade. Tasted August 2026.

This blend of old vine (up to 72 years old) chenin blanc, with clairette, viognier, grenache blanc and sémillon gris is exquisite and priced at under $40 it represents stellar value. It is mesmerisingly complex and richly pigmented with flavour, like a vivid kaleidoscope, including an array of stone, orchard, and citrus fruit, alongside the alluring scent of orchard blossoms. I find its texture utterly beguiling — glassy and creamy, yet firm, it features a delicate resistance and refreshing bitterness on the almost indelible finish. As splendid as this wine is now, I am tempted to buy a whole case of it to appreciate its gradual evolution over the next 5-10 years. Tasted August 2026.

This old-vine Swartland blend is anchored by chenin blanc, with clairette, viognier, grenache blanc and the lesser-known sémillon gris, adding a wealth of complexity. Powerful yet sophisticated, it delivers impressive concentration with a silken, mineral-laced texture. It already shows beautifully, but patience will be rewarded. At this price, it's hard to think of a more compelling cellar candidate. Tasted August 2026.

Give or take 70 percent chenin blanc with clairette blanc, viognier, grenache blanc and sémillon gris. The latter of which has recently been established as the world’s first officially certified sémillon gris vineyard at Mullineux’s Swartland Roundstone Estate. The near-hectare certified mother block ensures healthy plant material is available for future growers and researchers, while allowing the variety to be labelled simply and accurately as Sémillon Gris. Do not sleep on this variety’s contribution to a White Blend, a wine as concentrated and complex as any out of the Western Cape. The oscillate waves between the salty and sapid are endless, the finishing bitters a factor of grape blending, organic chemistry, and magic. What happens in the MOVW is not always understood, but it’s always well experienced. Drink 2026-2031. Tasted August 2026.
