Creamy & Mineral

Juan Jesús, who is a 4th generation winemaker, founded Viñátigo in 1990 and has worked tirelessly since then identifying, recuperating the native grapes of the Canary Islands.

Brought to the Canary Islands by the Portuguese in the 16th century, Juan Jesús found the grape Gual in the island of El Hierro in the late 90's. It was, together with the grape Marmajuelo, the first almost extinct variety tha Viñátigo recuperated. It was brought from the island of Madeira, where it is known as Boal. In Tenerife, the grape finds the perfect environment to ripen, and is made as a dry wine.

Viñátigo's Gual is fermented 50% in stainless steel tanks and 50% in concrete eggs. It is incredibly aromatic: with layers of smokiness, floral notes such as jasmine; and tropical fruits like pineapples. On the palate, it has a creamy texture, with an amazing balanced acidity.

Pair this rich and mineral white with white meats and rich fish dishes.

About the Winery

Viñátigo

Juan Jesús is a proud native of Tenerife and the fourth generation of growers. During the thirty years that he's overseen Bodegas Viñátigo, he has considerably increased its holdings, planting varieties that he and his team recuperated from near extinction.

Driven by passion and love for his homeland, Juan decided to revive and work to save the native grape varieties that were brought to the Canary Islands by the conquers back in the 15th century and that had survived on the islands for centuries. He is a hero of contemporary Canarian viticulture. The wealth of knowledge that his work has created has helped underpin the significant expansion of wine styles that are now available throughout the archipelago, and his wines have achieved a calibre of class that many doubted the Canaries would ever produce again. Spain’s island wines are becoming more popular and with this rich, multidimensional white from Tenerife you can see why. It’s 100% Gual (better known as Bual) and is buttery and textured. Fermented in steel and concrete egg, it shows a raft of tropical characters, including mango and guava, as well as straw, smoke and green tea. Laser-focused acidity pins it all together.
