Sister's Run
Sister’s Run is serious fun. Their talented young winemaker Elena wears steel cap work boots every day of course, but carries a pair of high heels in back of the ute, only for emergencies, like last minute invitations to accept trophies at gala wine show dinners and the like.
Returning from a ‘knees-up’ at midnight, mid vintage, she managed to kick off one high heel and slip back into a boot’ just as the cellar crew cried out, ‘Run Sister Run’; and exactly then their winemaker and label took flight!
The stiletto and boot are Sister’s Run; an independently owned and operated winery with a fierce commitment to making the best wines they can from family vineyards. They don’t take ourselves as seriously as we take our wines, but agree with Elena, all you need to know about wine is the five ‘V’s and remember the best wine is the wine you like.

This is great value in delicious, energetic and complex cabernet. The concentration, for the price, is remarkable and speaks to the mid-90s scores displayed on the bottle. It is charged with blackcurrant, blueberry, menthol/eucalyptus and peppery spice. It is full bodied, fairly dense, a touch sweet and warm, finishing with iodine and fresh herbs. The length is excellent.

After returning home to Ontario and starting his own wine company, he has had a hand in making 10+ wines in two hemispheres, 3 countries and 5 different appellations since the 2013 vintage.

The name is a nod to négociant and wine agent Nicholas Pearce's formative time spent in Bordeaux as 33 is the region's department number and Naujac, his street address. Pearce's collaborative merlot from Washington's Columbia Valley is impressively concentrated, full of ripe, fleshy fruit, wood spice and rich, voluminous tannins. The wine presents more new world than old world, is cleanly made and offers excellent length. Best now to 2026.

Grapes from Stanford, Greyton and Elgin. 70% fermented in large oak and 30% in concrete eggs. Complex aromatics with notes of black currant, peach, citrus, sea breeze, fennel and white pepper plus some leesy character. The 2020 Chablis Vaudésir Grand Cru has a terse, stony, austere bouquet whose neautrality I quite admire. The palate is well-balanced with a twist of sour lemon on the entry, moderate weight, with a patina of white chocolate towards the finish. Not bad, though it just misses some minerality towards the finish.

Once you've negotiated the awkwardly heavy bottle, the wine is a great pour. Powerfully tannic, it is rich in dark berry flavours and dense concentration. 100% Chardonnay. After a Platinum win for Elgin Chardonnay last year, we all suspected it was only a matter of time before this propitious combination of variety and region would make its way into our Top Fifty. So it proved this year, as this high-sited (200m-450m), mountain-fringed zone in the Cape's deep, ocean-cooled south brought us one of the most memorable of this year's Chardonnay cohort. It's pale dawn-yellow in colour, with taut yet close-knit aromas that suggest plant sap, peeled vegetable and spring leaf as much as green fruits. The 11 months' oak provide an aromatic backdrop without obscuring vineyard character. On the palate, the wine is lean, shapely, intense: a cool waterfall of Chardonnay fruits which sweep seamlessly over the tongue, leaving it looking for more. Drinkability, refreshment and a unique regional style come together memorably here. Best in Show.

Maison Roche de Bellene's entry-level pinot noir is an excellent choice for those looking for an affordable yet classic Bourgogne rouge. With notes of supple red berries, dark cherries, delicate toasted brown spices, and hints of savoury herbs and violets, it is full of character, yet shows the sense of self-possession one expects from pinot noir from this region. Kellerei Bozen - Cantine Bolzano
Cantina Bolzano, based in the town of Bolzano, traces its roots to two of Alto Adige’s most historic cooperatives: Santa Magdalena, est. 1930 and Cantina Gries, est. 1908. After deciding to merge in 2001, Cantina Bolzano was created. Bolzano is located in the middle of a valley basin surrounded by hilly vineyards that grow from 200 meters above sea level up to 1000. North and south meet in this valley, and the sun warms the stony soils with its pronounced diurnal temperatures, protecting the vines from the cold.
The average growers’ plots in Sudtirol averages only approx. 1 hectare, and the area, with its famed reputation and steep slopes, is an expensive area to farm. The member of Bolzano (approx. 300 in all) own many of the best vineyards throughout the region, including the Valle Isarco, and pool their resources to create top quality wines. And while no grower is certified organic, many practice organic viticulture and all of them adhere to natural practices in their vineyards. Most growers have lived on their farms with their families for generations. They protect their land and cultivate their vineyards as they have done for generations with total respect of the environment where they live.

Deeply coloured for such a young wine, also very viscous and ripe on the nose, the heat of the 2022 vintage in Northern Italy comes through clearly in this wine. The palate is broad and fleshy, offering plenty of yellow-fleshed orchard fruit, ripe citrus and more in a concentrated expression, lingering nicely. It's not an easy-drinking, quaffable pinot grigio by any means, but a wine of depth and substance, best served at the table with equally high-intensity dishes, up to and including white meats, roast chicken and pork. The single vineyard cru Lazazarito is added in 2016 and it is Daniele Gaia’s first harvest at Réva. Drive the best car and drive it right away. “This is the best wine Réva has never made, “ says Gaia with great irony and humility. Tasted from low temperatures (22-24 degrees) in tank there was fear of Lazzrito’s tannins. Here above Serralunga a long strip on the top of the eastern side of the hill gives a marl-calcaire meets sandy soikl and so the best of both structural worlds; freshness (also from high pH) and grip. Yes it’s silly young and impressionable but already handsome, unadorned and fruit so crunchy, yet also sapid, a pinch salty and the impression of acidity is a freshness with thanks to that elevated pH. A sample but already in bottle and will be released in two years. Drink 2024-2036. Tasted January 2020.

Azienda Agricola Tornatore
Out of a Sicilian family heritage that traces back to the 17th century, the Tornatore’s Mount Etna wine ventures began in 1865. Today the family’s operations are headed by Giuseppe Tornatore, a businessman whose expertise led to the acquisition of some of the region’s finest north-facing vineyards in the early 2000’s. That heritage and the Tornatore’s profound respect and understanding of the land is showcased in wines that capture the essence of Etna, deftly balancing concentrated flavors, complexity, freshness and refinement.
The company lies in the northern side of Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. The soils have volcanic origin and were created through the disintegration of lava, ash and stones from previous volcanic eruptions. The climate on the northern side of the Etna is characterized by mild temperatures, and more rain fall reflecting the influence of the Volcano. The combination of soil, climate and the skill of the winemakers, have made the northern slope of Etna an ideal area for the production of high-quality wines. “Our vineyards and our winery are only a few kilometers from our family home. Our entire family is rooted there. We have the greatest respect for this region, and we believe we have a responsibility to be stewards of Etna and to reflect its distinct character in our wines.” - Giuseppe Tornatore

The 2020 Selección de Parcelas Los Primos Chardonnay was cropped from a warm and dry vintage, but in Traiguén in the south, it is not as warm as in the central valley of Chile. The grapes were harvested the first half of April; they harvested earlier and finished with more alcohol, still a moderate 13.5%, from a year of more body and rounder wines but without heat. The wine kept a pH of 3.16 and 6.9 grams of acidity. This also makes the wine a little more Burgundian, more Meursault than Chablis or Puligny, tasty, spicy with a tad more oak (all the new barrels for white are 400-liter ones, 38% of them new in 2020), because in warmer years there is a little more extraction from the oak. This is the warmest vintage so far, but the wine is still bone dry and there is no ripeness; but there's more weight and width. The wines have to show the differences of the climate conditions each year... 4,069 bottles were filled in July 2021.

Deeply scented pinot noir with intense cassis, dark cherry/berry, vanilla and classy French oak flavours. Bright, youthful wine with power and energy. Accessible now but with good cellaring potential.
